"Three Days in Pain. One Chance to Save Him."
Dudley lay in a hospital bed with a broken leg, waiting for a doctor who would not come, until AOI stepped in.

On January 10th, 2018 at 8:35 PM EST, my phone rang. It was Jessica, our Mission Partner at Damou Christian Mission in Jacmel, Haiti. Her voice was urgent. One of our own—a bright-eyed kindergartener named Dudley—had just been struck by a motorcycle while crossing the street. In Haiti, accidents like this are heartbreakingly common.

Dudley’s injuries were severe. He was rushed to the government-run Saint-Michel Hospital, where X-rays would later confirm his leg was broken in two places. The hospital staff did what they could,

they stitched his head wound and splinted his leg—but there was no doctor on staff who could set his fractures. Even more shocking, there was no pain medication available. Dudley would wait three long days, in agony, before a surgeon arrived from Port-au-Prince.

A Hospital Built on Broken Promises

Saint-Michel was meant to be a state-of-the-art 200-bed facility, built by Canadians and the Japanese after the devastating 2010 earthquake. But when our team was granted unprecedented access, what we found was devastating: hundreds of patients waiting to be seen… and only one doctor on duty for the entire hospital. The pharmacy shelves were bare; many bins sat completely empty.

It was a living portrait of government corruption—and the people paying the price were the most vulnerable.

Matthew 25:40 reminds us: “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

A Price on Healing

Finally, on January 13th at 6:56 PM, Dudley’s surgery began. But before the operation could happen, the hospital demanded $403—not for the doctor, but simply for the use of the facility. Without it, Dudley’s treatment would be delayed yet again. Amazing Orphans International stepped in and covered the cost so he could get the care he so desperately needed.
